Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.
Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the option to challenge certain rulings from the official, following the practice already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
